The original Steamer was played at the Newport Squash Club in 1987 and quickly became one of the greatest tournaments in the country. The Steamer was a world class squash tournament in one of the greatest summer cities in the world.

In 2012, a group of the original participants of the Steamer got together to bring this great tournament back.  We had 150 participants and more importantly had an amazing weekend.

In 2013, we had an even bigger turnout and used the courts at Portsmouth Abbey Courts to allow so many players.

In 2014 we once again had a huge turn out with over 140 participants.
In 2015 we took things to another level in delivering a great squash experience as we offered two weekends of Squash. US Squash accredited us with a Gold Level Jr Tournament for the first time. We weren't going to let our Jr Silver and Adult Open go away, so we did two back to back weekends of great squash, fun, and enjoyment of one of the best places to be in the summer.

In 2016- we came back to our one weekend of the Adult Open and Jr Silver as US Squash rotated the Summer Gold around the region.

2017 marked a return to a two-weekend event where US Squash brought the Gold back to us. We had an amazing weekend of The Adult Open followed by the Gold the next weekend. Our second Gold event in three years became the largest summer gold possibly ever and the level of play resembled one of the toughest draws for any Gold all season.

In 2018, US Squash once again accredited the Summer as a Jr Gold in Newport after a weekend of the Adult Open. The Jr Gold had 279 players making it one of the largest tournaments in the country.

We hope you will join the tradition in Newport with us this summer.
